Overview
Charles Town was founded by Charles Washington, younger brother of George Washington, and its downtown along Washington Street still has many 18th- and 19th-century buildings. It is home to the Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races.
Types of homes
Older homes and bungalows near downtown, newer subdivisions on the edges of town and in neighboring Ranson, and farms and acreage a short drive out.
What to know before you buy here
- Homes close to downtown are often older. Plan for an inspection that looks closely at wiring, plumbing and the foundation.
- Charles Town and Ranson sit side by side, and newer neighborhoods spread out from both. Check which town an address is in, since services and rules can differ.
- Farms and acreage are only a few minutes outside town if you want more land.
